Let's reframe this.

When at first you don't succeed, try try again.

The face of PR is changing as we know it, particularly in relation to the impact and implications of social media. My most recent idea: freelance part-time as a Social Media Specialist. THAT'S IT! This epiphany initially left me feeling like a true genius. Work for free, gain the experience, earn a foot in the door, and... bam! A position opens up.

I dreamt this new war tactic up last week and immediately wrote an email to the largest PR agency in Philadelphia. I was downright giddy. Who would turn down an offer for pro bono work? I only hoped that my 2nd interview there would result in something other than, "We're on a hiring freeze, but you seem like you'd be great!"

Apparently my idea wasn't as genius as I had initially thought. As appreciative as I was to receive a response, I was disappointed to see that they don't have a policy for freelancers. "Disappointed" is not the right word. What I mean to say is, it sent me to the dark place. The actions that occurred next are completely out of character: I entered a zombie-like state, drove to McDonalds, ordered a burger and fries and stuffed my face while my body assumed the fetal position in the driver's seat. The sound of rain pounding on the roof sent me to sleep.

I woke up with an aching neck only to realize that my methodology was all wrong. Maybe what I need to do is approach smaller companies and/or non-profits. After all, I love working for non-profits! Those are the type of companies that might have space for a starter like me. I began following @socialmediajobs and created a list of non-profits that sound incredible! With so many worthwhile causes to invest in, choosing a nonprofit could be tough. Above all things, I dream of being an abolitionist and contributing to the end of modern day slavery and sex trafficking. So here I go, off to nonprofit land!

P.S. Did you know that 27 million people are enslaved today? The US is the #1 destination for slaves. Within the US, Philadelphia ranks the 4th highest destination.

  2. Brilliant! A great way to contribute to causes you really care about and build your resume. A non-profit would be so lucky to have someone like you call them!
