For those of you who haven't made it to my not-so-ancient archives, let me explain where I'm at with this blog:
I'm retracing my post graduation job seeking steps and non-steps from the past two years. The last 3 blog entries were written in real-time. While I currently continue on my pursuit of a part-time freelance position as a Social Media Specialist, I'm going to turn back to the past and mark out points along my job-searching trek.
Now, where were we? Oh yes. March 2009. I was bartending full-time at the upscale Nightclub in Center City Philadelphia when I heard about The Best Job in the World Competition.
The Best Job in the World: The Caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef.
This “job” entailed living in Australia for 6 months in a 3 bedroom house, snorkeling, feeding the fish, island hopping, flying around with the postal service and BLOGGING about life as a tourist. Oh, and making $150,000. Anyone who wanted to tryout could submit a 60 second video application, explaining why he or she was the best person for the position.
Obviously I considered myself the most qualified candidate. This was my big chance, the reason all of the other job applications had fallen through! I truly believed I would win this contest and be heading to Australia. I mean, why wouldn't they choose me? It was serious video production time.
Two of my best friends immediately dropped what they were doing and came to my side. One jumped on a plane and flew to Philly the same day, while the other skipped out on work. We spent three whole days creating a storyboard, shooting and editing video, writing lyrics, dropping beats and getting the hook juuuuuust right. If I won, they’d be joining me in the Land Down Under as occupants of the remaining two bedrooms. We only had to outdo 34,000 other applicants. Frankly, this would be cake.
For your viewing pleasure, here is our final product:
I needed votes to push me to the top, so I created a Facebook group and invited all of the people from high school that I hadn't seen in 5 years to join it. Together with my 100 Facebook fans and extended family, we began voting my way into Australia.
Well folks, I'm still writing this blog about trying to find a job, so you can bet that I didn't win. Someone told me that the winner actually got stung by jellyfish. I'm not happy to hear this news, to be sure, but it does make me all the more okay with the fact that I let him win the competition.

I found out about this job a little too late, but I blogged about it as well. How cool would that have been? Your video is pretty cute and creative!
ReplyDeleteYou TOTALLY should've won! Especially with that million dollar expression at the end of the video!
ReplyDeleteBut at least you didn't get stung by a jelly fish.
While I am impressed that you applied for that job, I would have never bothered. I cant even keep goldfish alive (my dogs are no problem them- they annoy me when they want food).
ReplyDeleteI JUST DIEEEEEEED watching that video.
ReplyDelete"ahh it's snowing! it's a sign from God! QUICK put on your bathing suuuuuitttt!"
